Biography:

Connie Herring was born and raised on a farm near Iowa City, Iowa, and now lives and works full time on her sculpture in Larchwood, Iowa. She earned a Master of Fine Art degree in sculpture from the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, in 1985, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Chadron State College, Chadron, Nebraska, in 1974. Ms. Herring was Assistant Professor of Art at Dakota State University at Madison, South Dakota, from 1980 until 1990. She continues to teach a variety of workshops throughout the Midwest.

Ms. Herring received a Project Grant for "Circle of Hope," a multi-media installation, and two technical assistance grants from the Iowa Arts Council. She has also received an Artist Fellowship Grant, and a touring arts grant for "The Clearing," a multi-media installation, from the South Dakota Arts Council.

"The Clearing," was named one of the top three exhibits of 1996 by Ann Grauvogl, Argus Leader, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Her handmade paper sculptures and wire sculptures are represented in the book Sculpture:Technique: Form: Content by Arthur Williams, Davis Publications, Worcester, MA.

Ms. Herring's work has been in numerous invitational and juried exhibits throughout the Midwest, Texas, Tennessee and Taiwan. Ms. Herring has had 37 solo exhibits, and maintains an active exhibit schedule. Some of the solo exhibits include: the Bloomington Art Center, Bloomington,MN, the McNider Art Museum, Mason City, IA., the Blanden Memorial Art Museum, Fort Dodge, IA., Oscar Howe Art Center, Mitchell, SD, the Civic Fine Arts Center, Sioux Falls, SD, South West State University, Marshall, MN, Dakota State University, Madison, SD, University of South Dakota, Vermillion, SD, Northern State University, Aberdeen, SD, School of Mines, Rapid City, SD, University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, ND, CSPS, Cedar Rapids, IA, and the Sioux City Art Center, Sioux City, IA.

Ms. Herring also makes handmade books, weavings on commission, and designs personal jewelry on request.



Artist's Statement:

"My sculptures are in constant search for the essence of life. They deal with the spirit and the relationships between all things. They search for quiet places."
