This painting on masonite is inspired by the Badlands' Notch Trail and the view offered at the end of the trail. It's an area of full sun and deep shadows, treacherous footing, and winding crevasses.

It is very difficult NOT to encounter a fence while hiking. It divides the land and domesticated animals into neat little packages.

June 2008: this painting has been purchased by the state of South Dakota. It will be in the Legislative conference room.
