SDAN member Gary Hartenhoff writes:
"In my last newsletter I told you I was working on two commissions for the new Heartland Energy building in Madison, South Dakota. One will identify the vastness of the great prairie when it was called Dakota Territory and the early pioneers were migrating to settle this great land. The second will show how South Dakota blossomed into the wonderful crop lands we enjoy today. _____________________________
DAKOTA CREATIVE CONNECTIONS UPDATE…
Over the course of two years, artists from North Dakota and South Dakota collaborated with the Bush Foundation to explore new ways of supporting the professional development of artists in the region through the Dakota Creative Connections grant program. During this time, the Foundation made 20 grants totaling over $99,000 to support artists in the Dakotas.
The Bush Foundation will not be accepting any additional applications for funding under this program as it is currently configured. As part of its GOALS FOR A DECADE, the Foundation has been working to bring its programs into clearer focus on educational achievement, Native nation rebuilding, and leadership and community engagement. We hope that the lessons learned from Dakota Creative Connections can help us in this work, and can also be of help to artists and arts organizations across North and South Dakota.
As planned, the 2009 grantees will be invited to two retreats in 2010, and will be asked to help formulate the lessons learned through this work. Ultimately, the Bush Foundation will release a report on the findings from this project, so that other individual or organizational funders can benefit from what we’ve learned during these two years.
We look forward to learning from Dakota Creative Connections and are grateful to all the artists who have participated in co-creating this work with us.
If you have any questions, please contact the Bush Artist Program at artists@bushfoundation.org. Sincerely,
Julie Gordon Dalgleish, Program Director, Bush Artist Program

TWO GREAT ART EXHIBIT OPENINGS, ONE NIGHT!
Harvey Dunn Collection and Best of the West Art Openings
Rapid City, SD The Dahl Arts Center is proud to celebrate two exhibits in one night with a reception to honor both on Friday May 21st from 5-7pm. Exhibit receptions are free and open to the public. Childcare available for ages 3 and up.
Best of the West (on display May 21-June 13, 2010) This exhibit was selected from hundreds of entries to the West River Arts Show held at Central States Fairgrounds Fine Arts Building and showcases artwork being produced in area high school art programs. It is a tremendous tribute to the talent and dedication of the students and their teachers and features multiple artistic mediums. This exhibit is sponsored by BankWest and student awards will be announced at 6 pm.
Harvey Dunn Collection (on display May 21-October 16, 2010) Security First Bank proudly presents the Harvey Dunn Collection at the Dahl Arts Center. The exhibit features selected pieces from the Dunn collection, which resides at the South Dakota Art Museum in Brookings. Remembered as one of South Dakota’s finest artists, Harvey Dunn is rarely shown west of the Missouri River. Harvey Dunn was a prairie painter, war artist, illustrator and teacher. His paintings are full of life, energy and emotion. His impressionistic painting style is reminiscent of Norman Rockwell, perhaps with a more documentary note. Bright blues, crisp yellows and warm browns draw the viewer into each painting and reveal stories of past life on the prairie. The opening will also feature a Dunn inspired, interpretive dance performance by Andrea Schaffer of Barefoot Dance Studio.
