The Payne Homestead, along U.S. Higway 12, near Java, SD, was a resource for my artwork for over 10 years. I completed about 30 paintings and drawings of this once wonderful home.

An abandoned station wagon was left on the site by the last family to reside there (c. 1960). The house was cobbled together and rebuilt over the years, using other abandoned dwellings.

I took the liberty to add signs of habitation, amid the scattered shards of plaster.

The Payne family eventually moved to the city and left the house to stand alone as a sentinel on the prairie and a reminder of the challenges folks faced in the early 20th century.
