Everyone sees the buildings in Deadwood, SD from the front along the main street but I was taken by the pattern created by the backs of the buildings - that was my focus for this painting.

Painted in studio based on pein air study done previously. This was painted close to where the early pioneers would cross the river as they were headed to Yankton from Sioux Falls in the old Dakota Territory.

Oil on gessoed panel painted en plein air. This was painted a little north of Deadwood, SD along what is known as Camp 5 Road. Just down the road a short distance is where modern day prospectors hunt for gold.

Oil on gessoed panel painted en plein air.This was painted on one of the last days of Decmber. The weather was somewhat temperate for northern Minnesota at that time of year so it was not too difficult. The next day I painted again only a hundred yards from here and as it was getting dark I was trying to finish up my painting in the rain. Funny weather for December, huh?
