USD, Vermillion, SD. Sketch view of Old Main from central campus.

At the heart of the USD campus, historic Old Main is the University's oldest building. Originally built in 1883 as University Hall, Old Main was destroyed by fire in 1893 and was immediately rebuilt. An assortment of materials and adornments from the 1893 Chicago World's Fair were used in the rebuilding, but not necessarily the iconic spires as often suggested by folklore. The building was completely renovated from 1993 to 1997 and now serves as the home to classrooms, USD's honors program, the Center for Academic Engagement, Farber Hall and the Oscar Howe Gallery.

In 2011, Sanford Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD contracted with five artists to produce paintings of landmarks in the top 20 communities supporting the hospital. Artists were to select a landmark in assigned communities that would be most recognizable by hospital patients, their families and visitors, and possibly by hospital staff.

I was assigned five communities- Vermillion, Beresford and Mitchell, South Dakota- Luverne, Minnesota- and Sheldon and Rock Rapids, Iowa.

My paintings, shown here, were completed, framed and installed by the hospital in patient floor corridors.

BERESFORD, SOUTH DAKOTA

Landmark: Historic band shell and stage in Bulow Park.

As a familiar site for Beresford outdoor community events and family photographs, the Bulow Park Band Shell stage right door opening and varied color field stone walls have invited audiences into a sloping grass lawn sitting area for generations. Scruffy trees lean in to pay homage to performers as a setting sun lights up ‘backstage’ and surrounding landscape.

In 1959 the park was dedicated as Bulow Park in honor of Governor William J. Bulow. (West end of Oak Street, Beresford, SD)

Bulow Park is the main city park of the town of Beresford, South Dakota. On June 3, 1959, the park was named in honor of the city's former mayor, William J. Bulow, who went on to become Governor of South Dakota and then United States Senator.
