Meridian Bridge

Yankton Area Arts invited plein air artists to Yankton in September for their first ever plein air event. It was a good one- with 14 artists in attendance, a great meal Friday night, and a super show and sale Saturday afternoon. The weather cooperated and we all felt welcomed in the community.

One of the things I knew I just had to try to paint was the Meridian Bridge, a historic structure across the river into Nebraska, which will be closed to motorized traffic and will now be used by pedestrians and bicycles.

On Saturday we went to the Downtown Historic District to paint during a Ribfest. I didn't manage to catch the smoke in my painting of The River Rose, a restaurant in the lower level of a quartzite bank building, but I did capture a local citizen 'gesture' as he sat on the steps for a few minutes.

Artists were also alowed to paint from the back yard of a local resident having view out across the river. I was impressed by the quality of view from a beautiful porch and trellis.

Over from the house a ways, at the Sacred Heart Hospital, there were scenic river overlooks to paint from all day. I painted River's Bend earlier in the day as a morning fog was slowly lifting.
