McCrory Gardens in Brookings, SD is one of my favorite plein air painting events to attend in August each summer. Local artists do a great job organizing a two-day event that starts with sketching at the Friday night 'Garden Party' hosted by SDSU and served up with free ice cream, tours and jazz musicians. "Pick spots to paint tomorrow, because we'll get together at the Pizza Ranch and then show our work in the lobby during intermission at the local BAC stage production of Sound of Music."

I didn't know what these flowers were when I painted them, and they weren't labeled. My mother-in-law says she used to call them "pinks" when she was a young girl.

There's a small structure in the Garden that I like to call the "Cottage". But it's actually an old gas station building that was moved there. It's repainted fairly often, and the changing light affects it so many ways, that I've taken to doing smaller watercolor sketches of it just to keep track.
